Is the Women for Sobriety Program right for you?

Parts of the following information were taken from a research study published in the Journal of Drug Issues, 26(1), 077-094 1996.

You may find the Women for Sobriety Program difficult for you in the following circumstances. This is not to say that you won't find the Program useful, but it is important to realize that you have not failed if you find that this Program doesn't work for you.

  • If you suffer from clinical depression:

A large part of the WFS Program is about developing a positive attitude by changing negative thoughts into positive ones. This may be particularly difficult for a woman with depression, resulting in feelings of hopelessness and self-blame.

  • You feel that The WFS Program expects too much of you:

WFS believes in taking responsibility for yourself, becoming solution-oriented, and developing the habit of positive thinking. This may seem like a lot to ask of the recovering woman.

On a positive note:

Although a large part of the WFS Program is based on positive cognitive therapy, it also builds your self-esteem, helps you to let go of the past, focuses on self-growth, and addresses the issues of love and spirituality. These are areas that many recovering women will find helpful in leading a sober, rewarding life.

The Women for Sobriety Program can be a welcome alternative, or addition, to Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous.
